What it is

The bass guitar (or electric bass) is an electric guitar with low-pitched strings, usually four (sometimes five or six for extended range), tuned an octave below a standard guitar's four lowest strings. Its solid body and electromagnetic pickups send the sound to a dedicated amplifier designed to faithfully reproduce low frequencies.

Origins and history

Developed in the United States in the 1950s (notably by Leo Fender) to replace the acoustic double bass, which was bulkier and harder to hear in an amplified band, the electric bass became essential across all modern music styles, from rock to funk, pop, and many contemporary Moroccan chaabi and fusion ensembles.

Manufacturing and materials

The body is typically alder, ash or mahogany, the neck maple with a rosewood or maple fingerboard, and the pickups (single-coil, humbucker or active) are calibrated to faithfully capture the rich low frequencies produced by thicker, longer strings than a standard guitar's.

How to choose the right one

  • Number of strings: 4 strings for versatility and simplicity, 5 strings for an extended low range (useful in fusion and metal).
  • Weight and balance: a well-balanced body prevents the neck from 'diving' when playing standing with a strap.
  • Dedicated amplifier: a standard guitar amp doesn't properly reproduce low frequencies; a bass amp is essential.
  • Pickup type: active pickups offer more tone-shaping options than passive ones, at the cost of a battery to replace.

How it's played

The bass is played standing with a strap or sitting, with the fingers (fingerstyle), a pick, or by slapping (a percussive technique popularised by funk), weaving the rhythmic and harmonic lines that support the whole band.

Care and maintenance

Bass strings, being thicker, pick up grime from sweat and benefit from regular cleaning to preserve tonal clarity. Store the instrument in a padded gig bag or hard case, protecting the particularly long neck from impact.

Also called electric bass; not to be confused with the acoustic double bass.

Frequently asked questions

4 or 5 strings — which should I choose to start out?+

A 4-string bass is generally recommended for beginners: it covers the vast majority of musical styles and makes learning easier before considering a fifth low string if needed.

Do I really need a bass-specific amplifier?+

Yes, a standard guitar amplifier isn't designed to properly reproduce low frequencies and can even be damaged; a dedicated bass amp is strongly recommended.

Is bass easier than guitar?+

It generally has fewer strings to manage at once (no complex solo chords to play), making it approachable, but it demands a solid sense of rhythm and harmony to accompany a band well.
